2015 Taiwan’s MICE Industry Goes Green

To promote energy saving and carbon reduction among members of the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events (MICE) industry, in November of 2015, Taiwan’s Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) unveiled a list of its Green MICE Incentive Program‘s top performers to give recognition to the five conference/event organizers, the Taiwan International Green Industry Show (TiGiS), Taiwan International Photovoltaic Exhibition (PV Taiwan), the ISO 20121-certified Taipei International Electronics Show (TAITRONICS), the greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory certified Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (KEC), and ISWA Beacon Conference: 3rd International Conference on Final Sinks for its third-party carbon footprint verification.

The BOFT-led MEET TAIWAN program, implemented by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), encourages sustainable, energy-saving MICE efforts along five different aspects including transportation, dining, accommodations, decorations, and promotional materials. In addition to the annually updated Green MICE Guidelines, BOFT offers local MICE service providers cash incentives, comprehensive mentoring, 100% government-funded certification programs based on international standards such as ISO 20121, GHG inventories and carbon footprint. Below are some great examples of how organizers implemented green measures in 2015, which can be duplicated to other exhibitions.

For several years, event access IDs have been recycled by the TPCA as part of a charitable drive.

Taiwan Printed Circuit Association (TPCA), the organizer of the 16th TPCA Show and a stalwart advocate for green MICE, launched the TPCA Environment Foundation (TPCF) in 2015 to provide a platform for industry-wide charitable partnerships that help rebrand Taiwan‘s printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers as environmentally conscious businesses engaged in social welfare, creating an image of green public servants for the PCB industry. Besides providing regular shuttle services for its visitors and participating in charity-driven badge recycling, the highlight of this year’s TPCA Show was a government policy-oriented badge of green power from Taiwan Power Company that offset a whopping 98% of electricity use during the show and cut carbon emissions by 25 metric tons.

TPCA also launched the 5th "iECO Green Design Contest" as part of the TPCA Show this year, luring a record-breaking 21 entries, almost doubling the number of participants compared to the previous year. Not only did TPCA offer exhibitors as well as event decorators pre-show training on green booth layout, it also showed immense dedication to the green MICE cause by promising, as an incentive, iECO Design Award winners with the opportunity to select their booth locations before anyone else, according to Secretary General Zhan of the association.

Event information integrated with robotic arms at the 2015 TAIROS

The 2015 Taiwan Automation Intelligence and Robot Show (TAIROS) is organized by Chan Chao Int‘l Co., who promoted its green concepts through its website and during its meetings with various vendors, as well as formulated ingenious ideas out of existing designs such as: Displaying event information directly on the products on display (robotic arms), badge The canvas backdrops used for project presentations were intentionally left with blank spaces in-between for projecting images which can be reused for other events, badge transportation and equipment rental costs, adding value to TAIROS based on green ingenuity without affecting its scheduled proceedings.

The Association for Talent Development (ATD) Asia Pacific Conference organized by the Tze Chiang Foundation of Science and Technology not only developed their own customized app, all of the class schedules and information are listed on their official website. Wi-Fi base stations and routers were also set up. "Since many conference participants are quite used to electronic data storage devices, we decided to adopt cloud computing wherever there’s an Internet connection, which helped minimize paper use, too," the organizer explained.

Large production items were recycled, broken down, and reused at the International Conference on Nutrition and Physical Activity 2015

The venue amenities of the International Conference on Nutrition and Physical Activity 2015 were smartly allocated to ensure a green meeting experience, evidenced by the on-site screen that displayed important event information and drinking fountains that replaced bottled water. To further illustrate such eco-conscious efforts, Director Huang from Willy Event Consultants Co. who assisted sceen, removed a directional sign at the check-in counter to reveal an old agenda bulletin from a previous meeting on its opposite side. Director Huang stated, "Large printed materials such as bulletin boards or photo backdrops are inevitable during international meetings, but to reduce wastes and carbon emissions, we can cut them into smaller, recyclable pieces and print on the back side. If having ’no display boards‘ is not an option, then just try your best to make them with reused stuff."

The Taiwan Association for Traditional and Complementary Medicine planned a "green" venue layout for the 2nd International Conference of Traditional and Complementary Medicine on Health. Important event information was accessible via a customized mobile app which reduced the amount of printed material significantly. The event‘s conference room as well as booth areas adopted modular structures, reducing the amount of unnecessary decorations. The results of a questionnaire survey indicated a highly positive response to these green practices during the event, which many conference-goers expressed that they did not see the same level of commitment when attending similar conferences in other countries; they were deeply impressed and approved of the green measures.
